Louis Pincus, chairman of the Jewish Agency Executive, predicted today that there would be a large increase of Jewish immigration from Latin America this year, though not in really significant numbers. Pincus, who recently returned from a conference of Latin American Jewish communities in Lima, said that political ferment and social upheavals on that continent caused the local Jewish communities to give greater thought to emigration to Israel.
He said the exact size of the Latin American aliya would depend in large measure on Israel’s success in improving the absorption process. He noted that much work needs to be done to advance Jewish education in South America, adding that at the Lima conference concern was expressed over the decline in the number of Jewish children receiving a Jewish education.
Israel’s foreign currency income from tourism was $276 million during the first 8 months of 1972 compared to $230 million during the same period last year.
