A left-wing organization member, Joseph Kottel, who is a veteran in a paratroopers reserve unit, was sentenced to 35-days imprisonment for refusing to report for service in his unit. Kottel reportedly is a member of the SIAH, the Israeli New Left, one of the small radical left-wing groups which favor a more liberal position by the government in regard to the Middle East problem. This was one of the very rare cases of a reserve soldier refusing to report for active service which, according to law, cannot exceed 30 days.
