Mapam has decided to remain within the Labor Alignment. A vote taken at the party’s sixth national convention last week-end indicated that more than two-thirds of the delegates favored a joint list with Labor in next fall’s national elections instead of an independent Mapam list as advocated by some factions within the party. Opposition to the alignment declined slightly from 34.5 percent in an earlier vote to 31.5 percent in the latest one.
The opposition was represented by Naphtali Ben. Moshe, secretary of the party’s Central Committee. But the views of Yaacob Hazan. Reuben Arazi and other veteran Mapam leaders prevailed. Arazi argued that Mapam’s adherence to the Alignment “blocks the rise of the right-wing.” A pro-Alignment policy was also urged on Mapam by Yitzhak Ben Aharon, secretary general of Histadrut, who was a guest speaker at the convention.
