Asher Ben Natan, Israeli Ambassador to France told more than 100 leaders of the American Jewish community that the Jews of the Soviet Union “are demonstrating great courage by protesting against the Soviet regime and by applying for exit visas despite inevitable harassment and threats.” Ben Natan, who was guest speaker here at a national meeting for the 1973 United Jewish Appeal campaign, stressed that “the burden of providing for their (Soviet Jews) absorption rests with world Jewry. We must make certain that for them and for all Jews who are oppressed, Israel remains a haven.”
Paul Zuckerman, UJA general chairman, told the leaders that the gathering was “a dramatic demonstration of the solidarity of American Jewry in its unswerving commitment to support the human needs of the people of Israel.” William J. Levitt of New York, chairman of the 1973 UJA campaign of Greater New York, indicated that based on the results of the meeting, he was confident that the 1973 national campaign would exceed that of 1972. The UJA 1973 goal is $505 million.
