Thousands of researchers from the Soviet Union and Western countries are expected to immigrate to Israel during the next five years and Israel is taking steps to ensure their absorption and employment. The Cabinet yesterday established an independent body for the purpose under the overall jurisdiction of the Prime Minister’s Office.
The new body, which has been given an 10 million budget, will classify researchers in the sciences and arts as they arrive and will lay out employment plans for them. It will also initiate research projects and similar ventures which will provide jobs for the newcomers.
Officials stressed that the new body’s work will be administrative and advisory. The actual creation of employment opportunities and research facilities will be carried out by an IL 100 million fund recently announced by Finance Minister Pinhas Sapir.
The newly established body will be run by a committee comprised of representatives of the Absorption, Labor, Education and Finance Ministries, government research bodies, universities and the Jewish Agency.
Striking doctors walked out of a negotiating session last night, demanded the resignation of Health Minister Victor Shemtov and declared that they would intensify their strike against government hospitals and public health agencies now in its third week. The 6000 striking physicians, all publicly employed, are demanding a 60 percent salary increase while the government is holding the line at 45.6 percent.
