Henry Bradlow, South African Communal Leader, Dead at 85

Henry Bradlow, the grand old man of Orange Free State Jewry and its veteran leader for many years, died here last week at the age of 85. Born in Vilna, he came to South Africa in 1908 and settled in Bloemfontein. where he was one of the founders of the national furniture business bearing the Bradlow name.

He was chairman for 25 years of the OFS Committee of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, and was elected its Honorary Life President. He was also a vice-president of the national body.

Mr. Bradlow was president of the United Hebrew Institutions of Bloemfontein, which he helped to build, and held high office in many other bodies, local and national. He also played a leading part in the Israel United Appeal and United Communal Fund campaigns in the Free State and played a pivotal role in the South African Jewish War Appeal.

Gideon Rafael was formally appointed today as Israel’s Ambassador to London after official agreement came through from Whitehall. Rafael will replace Michael Comay in the fall. Rafael, 60, was a member of Israel’s first UN delegation.
