The Gahal Executive today unanimously rejected a request by Rabbi Meir Kahane to include the Jewish Defense League in the non-Labor alignment Gahal is attempting to form for the forthcoming national elections. According to observers, Gahal is having enough trouble putting together an opposition front to Premier Golda Meir’s Labor Alignment without becoming involved with the controversial JDL. The JDL announced some time ago that it intended to seek Knesset seats.
Gahal, meanwhile, has accused Shmuel Tamir of the Free Center faction of impeding negotiations for an opposition alignment. The crucial point in the negotiations is the ratio of Knesset representation among the non-Labor factions. Gahal and the State List have agreed to base this on the composition of the present Knesset in which Gahal has 26 seats, the State List, three, and Free Center, two. But Tamir is insisting on at least 4-5 seats for his faction which he says it merits on the basis of public opinion polls. He has reportedly said that the non-Labor alignment would live or die on the issue of seats.
