The story of the Holocaust, depicted in multi-media, will be presented during the coming college semester in 10 cities housing major American universities. The "town and gown" project, to keep vivid the memory of Jewish martyrdom, particularly among young persons, is being arranged by B’nai B’rith through its Hillel Foundations and adult Jewish education program. A $10,000 grant from the World Federation of Bergen-Belsen Association, survivors of the Nazi death camp, is helping to finance the project.
"The meaning of the Holocaust must not be allowed to dim for adults, and it must not become remote to the new generation that knows of its horrors only through dry history books," said Josef Rosensaft of New York, president of the Bergen-Belsen group. "We must keep the memory alive as a warning of what could happen again to Jews or to any group excluded from normal society. And we must remember forever, in tribute to the persistence of the human spirit even in the face of inhumanity."
The multi-media presentation will include photographic exhibits, displays of documents and film showings dramatizing the era; presentation of Holocaust source material to college and community libraries; seminars by interfaith groups; campus lectures by scholars of the Holocaust period, and public talks by death camp survivors.
In each city, the project will offer a full schedule of programmed activities lasting a week or longer. It will also feature a Holocaust Information Center, both to assist relatives of Nazi victims and others seeking available data, and to gather additional information–letters, documents and the like –that may be in the private possession of survivors and their families.
Extensive land development work is being carried out in the Fatzael sector of the lower Jordan Valley by the Jewish National Fund. The program includes the preparation of land infrastructure for agriculture and other economic activities, construction of housing through reclamation, draining and road building. The plan for the Fatzael Valley, which is known for its fertile soil, calls for the establishment of three moshavim and two kibbutzim, covering a total of 16,000 dunams of land.
