The Jewish Federation Council said today that Standard Oil of California has sent a new letter to its 300,000 stockholders and employes “clarifying” an earlier letter in which it urged the U.S. to be more cognizant of Arab aspirations in the Middle East.
The text of the new letter was not disclosed by the firm. A Federation spokesman said, however, that it was “a constructive step to clear the air of confusion caused by the first letter.” The new letter reportedly calls for a “peace agreement fair and equitable to all states” in the Mideast.
The earlier letter which linked the possibility of an oil shortage with the Arab-Israeli dispute and implied that American support for Israel was responsible, aroused protests from Jewish groups all over the country. Los Angeles Jews started a boycott of SOCAL products in which 4000 of the company’s credit cards were destroyed by their holders.
