A telegram signed by Jewish leaders was sent yesterday to President Nixon and Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger stating: “The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, representing the American Jewish community, supports the position of our government in implementing the established policy of maintaining the balance of arms in the Middle East and in supplying Israel with materiel required to repel Arab aggression and to meet the challenge of the continuing massive Soviet resupply airlift.”
The telegram, sent after State Department spokesman Robert J. McCloskey announced in Washington that the U.S. has begun “some resupply” of war materiel to Israel, was signed by Jacob Stein, Chairman of the Conference, and the 31 presidents of the Conference of Presidents’ constituent organizations. Telegrams supporting the decision to resupply Israel were also sent today to Nixon and Dr. Kissinger by the leaders of the major national rabbinic and synagogal organizations of the three branches of American Judaism and the American Jewish Congress.
