A major Black weekly newspaper, the Amsterdam News, said that the election of Abraham Became as mayor of N.Y. could pave the way for a Black mayor the next time. “In some circles,” Simon Anekwe wrote, “the Became victory, heavily backed by Blacks, was seen as ultimately paving the way for a Black man to become mayor of New York.”
