Rep. Lester L. Wolff (D.NY) today called on the United States to take immediate steps towards severing diplomatic relations with those Arab nations participating in the oil boycott and to embargo shipments of all American goods and materials to those countries.
“The Congress must act to express the determination of this country that we will not be held hostage nor dictated to by nations who resort to criminal activities to get their way,” Wolff told the House. His recommendations were incorporated in a resolution which was referred to the House Foreign Affairs Committee. In a letter to Rep. Thomas E. Morgan (D.Pa.) the committee chairman, Wolff asked for early hearings on his measures.
Noting that some argue an embargo would be ineffective, Wolff said that it would serve to convince the Arab states that the U.S. is not weak and can deal firmly with those who “resort to blackmail and threaten our security.”
