New top-secret diplomatic efforts are going ahead with the hope of persuading Syria to abide by the Geneva Conventions regarding POWs. Officials in Jerusalem said there were new Israeli proposals–but they would not divulge any details at all, contending that premature publication would certainly kill all hope.
Premier Golda Meir met with parents of Israeli POWs and missing men for some hours in Jerusalem Sunday and briefed them in outline on the government’s latest efforts. She warned the parents that any leaks to the press would prejudice the chances of these efforts–and would also mean that the government would no longer share its information and efforts with the parents.
Among the parents were some of men missing believed dead on the southern front. So far, agreements with the Egyptian military on retrieving bodies within Egyptian-held territory have not been implemented and Israel is conducting contacts with the Red Cross on this problem, too.
