The trial of Rabbi Meir Kahane was adjourned temporarily today pending a decision by the Supreme Court as to whether certain defense evidence has to be presented in secret. The Jewish Defense League leader who is charged with conspiracy to violence and to harm Israel’s relations with a friendly nation–the U.S.–filed an appeal with the high court today asking that evidence in his behalf be presented at an open session of the Jerusalem district court.
His appeal was directed against a written request submitted several days ago to the court by Premier Golda Meir that the Kahane evidence concerning government activities in connection with Soviet immigration be kept secret in the interests of national security. District court Judge Jacob Bazak complied but ordered the postponement today, with the concurrence of State Prosecutor Gabriel Bach.
The nature of the alleged evidence is not known. Some of Kahane’s followers have intimated that he has evidence that the Israeli government worked clandestinely with the Russians to keep aliya within certain limits.
