The Labor Party Executive and its Knesset faction voted 31-13 Tuesday night to try to form a new government without elections. A committee of five was appointed to prepare a list of candidates for party leadership which will be submitted to the Central Committee Sunday. The Central Committee will select one of them to head the party, replacing Mrs. Golda Meir who resigned the Premiership last week.
But the decision-making forum rejected by a 29-14 vote a proposal by Deputy Premier Yigal Allon to call immediately for new elections. It also turned down, 24-17, a compromise proposed by MK Moshe Carmel to form a new government but allow the Knesset to decide by the end of the year whether to hold new elections. Today’s decision is considered fateful to the Labor Party’s and the nation’s future.
