A breakdown in one of the new turbines at the Ashdod power station produced blackouts last night in whole sections of Tel Aviv and surrounding towns and affected factory operations today. Power station officials promised the damaged equipment would be repaired by tomorrow.

Traffic lights failed, causing widespread inconvenience to motorists. Some of them fainted in their cars as they waited in lengthy traffic tie ups in sweltering heat. Police struggled to get traffic back to normal but were unable to prevent new traffic jams because of the inoperative traffic lights. Officials also reported delays in cable and telex service, which reduced service severely from the Jewish Telegraphic Agency here to JTA international headquarters in New York.
