Rabbi Baruch Korff head of the American National Citizens Committee for Fairness to the Presidency announced here today that he was initiating a fund to help finance former President Nixon’s legal expenses. In a press conference. Rabbi Korff expressed the hope that the Israelis would support that fund, and mentioned the support Nixon extended to Israel during the Yom Kippur War.

Korff telephoned the former President last night in San Clemente and reported that Nixon wished all his friends in Israel “a happy and healthy New Year.” Rabbi Korff said Nixon mentioned his fond memories of his 24-hour visit to Jerusalem last June and said Nixon sounded well and was not depressed. He quoted Nixon as saying “Jerusalem is a beautiful city, but I spent most of my time on the sixth floor of the King David Hotel,” to which Rabbi Korff replied: “That’s exactly where I am right now.”

Rabbi Korff who said he was not consulted by Nixon on the establishment of the fund, said the former president had already spent $40,000 in auditing his income tax documents and expected to spend another $50,000 on further legal expenses. The rabbi is here on a private visit.
