Israel Air Force planes attacked terrorist strongholds in southeast era Lebanon today and returned safely to their bases, a military spokesman announced. He said the attack began at 3:20 p.m. local time and continued intermittently for 15 minutes. A report from Lebanon said six Israeli aircraft took part in the attacks. Israeli Air Force planes attacked similar targets in southern Lebanon nine days ago, on the eve of Rosh Hashana, with the apparent objective of forestalling possible terrorist incursions into Israel during the holiday.

Meanwhile, a large-scale exercise by an Israeli army formation, the second in two months on the Golan Heights, ended this morning. Units of armor, infantry, artillery and the Air Force took part. Despite the extensive scope of the exercise, held on battle sites of the Yom Kippur War, life on the Golan Heights continued without obstruction and roads remained open to civilian traffic.
