Guy de Rothschild, France’s most prominent Jewish personality. issued a public statement yesterday condemning France’s recent United Nations and UNESCO votes The banker and philanthropist, who up to now has taken no position on the invitation to the Palestine Liberation Organization by the UN General Assembly and the anti-Israel UNESCO votes, declared that he fully supported the actions taken by the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France (CRIF).
“The right of Jews to exist and be respected is inseparable in our eyes from the application of the same right to the State of Israel,” he declared in a communique issued at the opening of the monthly meeting of the United Jewish Social Fund Steering Committee of which he is president.
“As integral members of our respective national communities, we are unable to accept that anyone can dispute Israel’s right to an equivalent place in the concert of nations,” Rothschild’s communique stated. He added that he did not see how France could reconcile its recent political initiatives and UN and UNESCO votes with the search for peaceful and negotiated solutions in the Middle East.
