Rabbi Israel Miller, chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, met with Undersecretary of State Joseph J. Sisco for an hour last night at the State Department. They discussed the UN General Assembly debate on the Palestine issue and the U.S. posture vis-a-vis the Palestine Liberation Organization in light of the concern caused by Sisco’s statement for the USIA.
Rabbi Miller received assurances that there had been no change in U.S. policy in support of Israel as stated by the President and the Secretary of State, that no recognition of the PLO has been accorded, and that no pressure is being brought upon Israel to negotiate with the PLO. Other subjects discussed were foreign aid and agricultural assistance bills as they relate to Israel and to all other situations in the Middle East. Sisco was hopeful that a period of quiet diplomacy would have positive results in Israeli-Egyptian negotiations. Rabbi Miller described the meeting as constructive and friendly.
