The heads of yeshivas in Jerusalem warned government officials that their institutions would be forced to close down unless more financial aid was forthcoming. The appeal for additional government help was made to representatives of the Religious Affairs Ministry. An official promised that Minister Yitzhak Rafael would ask Finance Minister Yehoshua Rabinowitz for increased government stipends to help support the religious schools.
In addition to seeking more money from the government, the yeshivas are planning to launch an international “crisis appeal” to save them from ruin. The appeal will be directed to public institutions here and abroad and to individual donors in Israel and overseas.
