Funeral services were held today for Yaacob Timan, an actor and founder of the first Jewish satirical theater in Israel, who died here Saturday at the age of 72, Mr. Timan was born in Russia and came to Palestine in 1925. He founded the “Hakumkum” theater and its successor, the “Matate” (Broom), which employed satire to attack social and cultural evils of the Jewish community in Palestine and the anti-Zionist attitude of the British mandatory regime. The “Matate” theater closed down after Israel’s independence but Timan continued to perform with a small company of actors in new immigrant townships and border settlements.
