Pinhas Sapir said today that he had achieved a breakthrough on aliya in his recent meetings with American Jewish community leaders. Sapir, who is chairman of the Jewish Agency and World Zionist Organization Executives, told reporters at Ben Gurion Airport on his return from the U.S. that the attitude of American Jews toward aliya has changed and that they now fully understand Israel’s needs.
Some years ago, the idea of aliya was remote and American Jews preferred to keep it at arms length, Sapir said Now, he stated, aliya is a subject to discuss and promote. He said, however, that aliya must become a responsibility of the American Jewish communities themselves, just as the United Jewish Appeal and the Israel Bonds campaigns are their responsibility.
