Israeli Foreign Minister Yigal Allon will launch a United Jewish Appeal cash collection campaign aimed at raising $100 million in cash during the next two months when he visits the U.S. next week, it was reported here yesterday by UJA General Chairman Frank R. Lautenberg. He said Allon would address cash campaign kick-off meetings in New York, Miami, Dallas, Los Angeles and Chicago.
Speaking at a meeting of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Lautenberg and Irving Bernstein, executive vice-chairman of the UJA, reported on their 36-hour visit to Israel from which they had just returned.
Lautenberg stressed the “critical nature” of Israel’s need for welfare services. He stated that despite the current recession in the U.S., pledges to the UJA’s 1975 campaign were running only five percent behind last year which he described as “near miraculous.” He said that cash collections were running ahead of last year, an “indication of the profound commitment of the Jews of America to the courage and determination of the Israeli people.”
Rabbi Israel Miller, chairman of the Presidents Conference, reported on his conversation with Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger in Washington last week. The details of his report were not disclosed.
