Rabbi Moses Rosen, Chief Rabbi of Rumania, plans to visit Peking after he completes his current visit to Jewish communities in Australia. Rabbi Rosen is one of the most senior representatives of world Jewry to visit China in recent years. Although the visit is a private one, Rabbi Rosen’s position as a member of the Rumanian Parliament will probably mean he will have the opportunity for informal meetings with Chinese officials. Rabbi Rosen said there were no Jewish communities in China but there could be matters of wider Jewish interest which could come up in his discussions.
The rabbi, who is a member of the governing council of the World Jewish Congress, will also visit Jewish communities in Hong Kong and Japan before returning to Bucharest via Peking. Rabbi Rosen, accompanied by his wife, has been visiting Australia as a guest speaker at commemoration activities arranged by the Executive Council of Australian Jewry to mark the 30th anniversary of the Holocaust.
