Israel and Brazil have signed an agreement opening the way for the export of Israeli-polished diamonds to Brazil and other Latin American countries. The deal was disclosed here today by Moshe Schnitzer, president of the Israeli Diamond Exchange, who just returned from Rio de Janeiro where he signed the agreement with the Brazilian Minister of Finance, H. Simonson. Under the agreement, Israel will help set up the first diamond exchange in Brazil and the latter country will exempt Israeli finished diamonds from customs duties. Schnitzer said the agreement had far-reaching consequences for Israel’s diamond industry which has been seeking new markets in Latin America because of its difficulties in the Far Eastern market.
