Controversy has arisen in Holland concerning the issuing of a stamp commemorating the tercentenary of the Sephardi Synagogue in Amsterdam. The stamp shows the synagogue on a miniature map of the surrounding area. On the map, the Catholic church facing the synagogue is marked by a small cross. A Sephardi executive approved the design, without noticing the cross, and one million stamps and ten thousand first day covers were printed. Protests have been mounted here and in Israel.
