The Jewish Telegraphic Agency’s Summer Intern Program began again this month for its fourth consecutive year, it was announced today by William M. Landau, JTA president. This year there are three interns — two in the JTA’s New York office and one in the Washington bureau. The 10-week program provides the trainees with an opportunity to cover and write about breaking and on-going news events, conduct interviews with prominent Jewish leaders, rewrite wire copy, and attend and write about communal activities and meetings.
Sheryl Anne Gura, interning in the New York JTA office, is a former writer and research assistant for the Associated Press, a writer for the Israeli Consulate in New York, and a writer for the Volunteer Office of Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Mindy J. Yochelson, also in the New York office, wrote articles for the Syracuse University newspaper, “Daily Orange,” for the university’s Hillel newspaper, “Sage,” and was a newscaster and writer for university radio station WAER-FM.
Debra Samuelson, interning in Washington, was a reporter and then editor of the University of Miami newspaper, “Miami Hurricane,” which won the All-American Award from the American Collegiate Press and the Sigma Chi Delta as best collegiate newspaper during her tenure. She was also editor of “Diaspora” magazine, published by the Hillel Jewish Student Center at the University of Miami, and wrote wire copy for CBS-News during the 1972 presidential campaign.
