Jewish Agency Chairman Pinhas Sapir revealed that more than 21,000 Israelis left Israel during 1974, compared with 13,000 in 1973. Sapir told students at the Hebrew University that the figure “deeply shocked” him. The annual average for the years between the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War was around 8000, Sapir said. Recently, an inter-departmental committee under Knesseter Adi Yaffe recommended a new program of aids and benefits designed to woo back Israelis living abroad.
