Informal consultations between members of the Security Council in regard to the mandate of United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) continued here today behind closed doors. A meeting of Security Council members was Scheduled to take place late this afternoon at the office of the Council’s president, Ambassador Eugenio Plaja of Italy. A United Nations spokesman said at the end of today’s meeting that Plaja might be able to announce when the Council will meet on the extension of the mandate which expires Thursday.

Secretary General Kurt Waldheim said through his spokesman today that he hopes “satisfactory arrangements” will be found for UNEF troops to stay in Sinai. Waldheim met with members of the Security Council and Israel and Egypt over the weekend. This morning he met with Plaja to discuss the situation in the Mideast.

UNEF’s future was also discussed today at a luncheon for Security Council members held at the Italian Mission here. Despite the heavy diplomatic activity, no formula has been shaped yet to extend UNEF’s life, according to sources here. The sources said that the Security Council might not meet until the last moment before UNEF’s mandate expires.
