At&t: No Compromise Because of Loan

The loan of $100 million by Saudi Arabia to the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. “in no way compromises A.T.& T.’s commitment to make every effort to recruit and promote the most qualified candidates into its jobs, including Jewish men and women,” Charles L. Brown, executive vice-president of A.T.&T., said today.

Brown made the statement in response to a Jewish Telegraphic Agency inquiry as to the giant utility’s reaction to an appeal by the American Jewish Congress that the utility state publicly that the loan would not influence employment policy toward Jews, “either at home or abroad, and that your company has not surrendered to the Arab boycott of Israel or of firms doing business with Israel. Asked whether the reply referred to hiring of Jews for employment in Saudi Arabia, Brown said, “We have no employes in Saudi Arabia.
