Premier Pierre Elliott Trudeau said today the Canadian government would not “bow to blackmail” from Arab countries over its decision to postpone indefinitely a United Nations-sponsored Congress on the Prevention of Crime which had been scheduled for Toronto Sept. 1-12.
Newsmen who met the Premier as he emerged from the House of Commons told him of reports from Beirut that the Arab states planned to retaliate against Canada for the postponement decision, and asked him for his reaction. He replied: “If the report is true, I can only say that we do not bow to blackmail. If some countries do not like our decision, they can lump it.”
