Settlements in northern Israel were subjected to a series of Katyusha rocket attacks from Lebanese territory last night but no casualties or damage was reported. An Army spokesman said Israeli forces returned the fire in all cases and that Israeli artillery engaged the sources of attack on the Lebanese side of the border. A Lebanese army spokesman claimed that Israel shelled the Shuba village area last night but reported no casualties.
The first Katyusha salvoes hit the region around Kibbutz Dan, Israel’s northernmost settlement. The rockets exploded in fields and caused no damage. Several rockets were fired at Kiryat Shemona at about midnight. An inspection early this morning showed that they exploded outside the residential area without causing casualties or damage. Several more rockets were fired after midnight at settlements in the northern Huleh region without causing casualties or damage.
Just before noon today a booby-trapped hand grenade exploded near a fence at a school in Kfar Saba, some 10 miles northeast of Herzliya. Pupils were in school at the time, thus no casualties occurred. Police teams searched all the schools in town but found no other explosives Several persons were detained for questioning.
Four terrorist infiltrators were killed by Israeli troops in two separate clashes along the northern border yesterday and Friday night. Two of the terrorists were killed yesterday in a sharp exchange of fire on the Kiryat Shemona-Metullah road in which two Israeli soldiers were slightly wounded. Friday night’s clash occurred near Kibbutz Zary where two terrorists infiltrated into Israel shortly before midnight. They were discovered by an Israel patrol combing the area and killed after a short battle. There were no Israeli casualties.
