A group of 25 potential immigrants from Brazil arrived in Israel this week on a study tour, arranged by the World Zionist Organization. The group, organized by the Brazilian Zionist Federation, consists of academicians and professionally trained people. The intention is that they ultimately settle in Beersheba within the framework of a broader scheme for the settlement of some 500 Latin American immigrant families there.
During their tour the group will visit development areas, suburbs and absorption centers around the country. Meanwhile the Jewish National Fund planted a grove of trees at Kibbutz Bror Hayil–a largely Latin American settlement–in the name of “Brazil Zionism.”
A large sign–“Brazilian Jewry is Zionist: Bror Hayil is proof of that”–greeted the hundreds of invited guests at the planting ceremony. They included members of the Brazilian Zionist Federation visiting Israel, members of the Brazilian Immigrants Society, and Jewish students from Brazil currently working here as volunteers under the “Tappuz” orange-picking program.
