A group of American Orthodox olim calling itself the Intermarriage Crisis Conference hit out here this week at a recent award given by Baltimore Congregation Chizuk Amuno to Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger. “A Jewish group that honors Henry Kissinger, or any intermarried Jew should re-examine its basic reason for existence,” the Conference stated in a press release.
The group is headed by Rabbi Noah Weinberg, formerly of New York, who runs a yeshiva for “Baalei Teshuva” in Jerusalem’s Old City. It includes Orthodox educators and professional people living in Jerusalem who immigrated from the U.S. Intermarriage, the group believes, is “the greatest threat to the survival of the Jewish people in our day.”
The Baltimore congregation’s award to Kissinger was an example of “the destructive confusion in certain sectors of the American Jewish community.” the group said. Kissinger spoke before 1500 persons on May 19 at Chizuk Amuno where he received the Conservative Congregation’s Distinguished Leadership Award.
