Funeral services were held Sunday for Donald B. Hurwitz, executive director of the Federation of Jewish Agencies of Greater Philadelphia for more than 20 years. Mr. Hurwitz, who died Saturday at the age of 65, was to have retired from his post at the end of the year.
Mr. Hurwitz was born in Tiffin, Ohio and was a graduate of Western Reserve University and its School of Applied Social Sciences. He served on the faculty of the McGill University School of Social Work in Montreal. He came to Philadelphia in 1955 to provide professional leadership for the merger of the two largest Jewish community organizations–the former Federation of Jewish Charities and the Allied Jewish Appeal. He was named executive director of the combined agencies. During more than 43 years in the social service field, Mr. Hurwitz held top administrative posts in Montreal, Houston, Tex. and New Haven, Conn. During World War II he served with the Joint Distribution Committee in Europe and North Africa where he administered programs of rescue and relief of Jews.
