Premier Yitzhak Rabin delivered a stinging attack on civil servants in Israel, specifically teachers who, he charged. are not pulling their weight. Addressing the convention of Hakibbutz Hameuchad, the Kibbutz movement of the Labor Party’s Achdut Avoda wing. Rabin contended that teachers and civil servants are not working hard enough. Israeli teachers spend fewer hours a day in the classroom than American teachers. he said.

Rabin declared that Israel has attained enormous achievements in agriculture and security but when it comes to education. “it turns out, to my regret, that the Israeli teacher of today has not proven himself as he should.”

Rabin accused teachers of being more concerned with working conditions than with the quality of education. While Israel faces grave political and security challenges, it is the internal social and economic conditions that will decide its future. Rabin said. He said it was unconscionable that at this crucial juncture in Israel’s history, civil servants should be fighting to maintain the privilege of summer hours — working one hour less a day during the summer months.
