News Brief

The State Department said this week that the U.S. is prepared to go ahead with the sale of civilian versions of the Lockheed C-130 military transport planes to Syria and Iraq despite expressions of concern by the Israel Embassy here over the deal. “It is a standard, normal commercial transaction.” Department spokesman Robert Funseth told reporters. The U.S. agreed earlier this year to sell six C-130s to Egypt. Sources here said Lock-heed planned to sell four L-100s–two to Syria and two to Iraq-with an option to sell two more to each country.
