To commemorate the centennial of Jewish settlement in the prairies (1877-1977), the Jewish Historical Society of Western Canada is sponsoring a series of lectures on Jewish subjects and an essay competition on a subject connected with the history of the Jewish community in Western Canada.
The series is partially funded by the Samuel and Saidye Bronfman Family Foundation. Judge I. Finestein, a past president of the Jewish Historical Society of England, will present the first lecture Sept. 19 at the Planetarium Auditorium in Winnipeg on “The Struggle of Religious Minorities for Civil Rights in 19th Century England.” All entries for the Centennial Essay Competition have to be in by Oct. 1.
“Journey Into Our Heritage,” the travelling exhibit on the Jewish communities of Western Canada, will open in Edmonton at the Provincial Museum Thursday. The exhibit was already presented in Vancouver, Victoria and Calgary, with thousands of visitors viewing it.
Sponsored by the Jewish Historical Society of Western Canada and the Jewish communities of Western Canada, the exhibit will be in Edmonton until Oct. 24. It opens in Saskatoon Nov. 4 at the Saskatoon Gallery and Conservatory and in Regina Dec. 16 at the Museum of Natural History. It will return to Winnipeg for showing during the summer of 1977.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
