“Thirty-eight years ago this week, the shattering of glass and the burning of synagogues throughout Germany signalled the first step in the implementation of the ‘final solution’–Hitler’s infamous plan for the elimination of the Jewish people,” It was recalled by Ruth Perry, national president of the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. “Crystal Night, as that event became known, has been indelibly engraved upon the memory of our people and was vividly recalled only a year ago when the UN adopted the obscene resolution equating Zionism with racism.”
Mrs. Perry said that these events and continuing perils which confront the Jewish people will be dealt with at the League’s international biennial convention at the Concord Hotel Nov. 14-18. During those five days, she stated, 2000 delegates “will grapple with the vital issues which challenge world Jewry today.” The convention will also launch the year-long celebration of the 60th anniversary of the League, Mrs. Perry said.
Among the 2000 delegates comprising the national and regional leadership of Sisterhoods of Conservative congregations throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico, will be an impressive contingent for the first time from Israel. Mrs. Perry noted that 24 Conservative synagogues have been established in Israel in the past decade and the Conservative movement there is gaining in strength.
