Rabbi Alexander Schindler, president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. lauded the appointment by President-elect Carter of Cyrus Vance as the prospective Secretary of State in his new Administration. Schindler, who is also chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued a statement here saying:

“We are very much pleased by this appointment. Mr. Vance has a most honorable record of governmental service. He is a man of good judgment, a superb negotiator. He is sensitive to human needs and a champion of human rights–precisely the kind of man who should be responsible for the conduct of our foreign policy in perilous times like these. On those issues of more particular concern to American Jews, he has always expressed most forcefully his conviction that the United States must assure the security and the survival of Israel. This reassures us.” Schindler made this statement at a press conference during a meeting of the UAHC Board of Trustees, the first to be held on the West Coast.
