The rate of unemployment in the latter half of 1976 was 25 percent higher than in the first half, a Treasury memorandum shows. At the end of last year, unemployment reached 3.8 percent of the labor force. Thus, the number of persons seeking jobs increased by 9 percent since the end of 1975. Daily unemployment went up by 37 percent and the number of job seekers who were not even referred to employers rose by 23 percent. Most of the unemployed are in the building trade. Economists say these figures are indicative of an economic slowdown trend.
