Under the joint sponsorship of the city of Atlanta, the State of Georgia and the Jewish National Fund, 1500 trees will be planted in what is to be known as the Urban Memorial Forest, which will beautify Routes I-85, I-75, and I-20 hub interchange between the stadium and the State Capitol on Memorial Drive, it was announced here today by the JNF.
The dedication will be held Wednesday at which time Georgia Governor George Busbee, Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson, Israel Consul General Nachum Astar, Meyer Pesin and Dr. Samuel I. Cohen, national president and executive vice-president, respectively, of the JNF, city and state leaders, and JNF officials will plant trees to beautify the heavily traveled approach to the city.
For the trees to be planted in the forest, comprising varieties of maple, dogwood, sweet gum, oak, crabapple and other species, the JNF, which has already planted 130 million trees in Israel, will plant an equivalent number in the Atlanta Section of the American Bicentennial Park in Israel.
The project was conceived by Theodore Mastroianni, director of the Bureau of Parks; Stuart Eizenstat, Counsel to the President on Domestic Affairs; and Cantor Isaac Goodfriend, JNF leader. Cooperating in this beautification project are the Atlanta Bureau of Parks and Recreation, the Georgia Department of Transportation, and the Georgia Forestry Commission.
