A U.S.-Soviet joint communique released in Moscow today said that “Special attention was given to the situation in the Middle East” during the three days of talks between U.S. Secretary of State Cyrus Vance and Soviet leaders and that “the sides have agreed that cooperation between the U.S. and the USSR, as co-chairmen of the Geneva conference, is essential in bringing about a just and lasting peace in the area.”
The communique disclosed that “An understanding was reached to hold, in the first half of May, 1977, in Geneva, a meeting between the Secretary of State of the U.S. and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the USSR for a thorough exchange of views on the Middle East problem, including the question of resuming the work of the Geneva conference.”
