Israeli Ambassador Simcha Dinitz called for greater Jewish solidarity to help Israel face what might be a “tough road ahead” in Middle East peace negotiations. Addressing a national meeting yesterday of the Campaign Cabinet of the Israel Bond Organization at the Washington Hilton Hotel, Dinitz said that “any plan imposed from the outside will make meaningful negotiations between the parties impossible. The parties to the war must be the parties to the peace negotiations,” the Ambassador asserted.
He noted that there has been a greater understanding on the part of the Administration of Israel’s position that “the essence of peace requires a change of the basic relationship between Israel and the Arabs.” Dinitz officially launched the nationwide campaign to enroll members in the Ambassador’s Society of Trustees through the individual purchase of $10,000 or more in Israel Bonds in 1977. This phase of the Bond drive will be headed by George Shapiro of Boston who was named National Chairman of this honor society.
Calling upon American Jews to strengthen Israel, Dinitz pointed out that it makes all the difference in the world whether Israel negotiates from weakness or strength. In response to the Ambassador’s plea, Michael Arnon, president of the Israel Bond Organization, declared that the coming weeks would see an intensification of the campaign to strengthen Israel’s economy to help promote its efforts to achieve a just peace settlement.
