The Cabinet named a five-man panel today to investigate organized crime in Israel and recommend ways to expedite the fight against it. The body is chaired by Jerusalem lawyer and former State Attorney Erwin Shimron and it includes another lawyer, a tax expert, an academic criminologist and a former head of the Shin Bet, the secret service.

Interior Minister Yosef Burg asked the panel to report within two months and to focus its attention particularly on the growth of crimes and violence, to learn “the organization and characteristics” of this type of crime. The appointment followed a spate of press articles and public debates on the growth of “organized crime” in Israel in recent years.
