The southern district police commander, Nitzav Arye Ivtzan, has written to the Israel Museum praising its security arrangements and assuring it that the police do not suspect any thefts of valuable antiquities from its stores or showcases. A report to this effect which appeared last month in some papers locally and abroad, including the Jewish Telegraphic Agency’s Daily News Bulletin, was mistaken, museum officials point out.
The police letter makes it clear that an investigation is proceeding regarding suspected thefts of antiquities from the Rockefeller Museum in East Jerusalem. “We have received no complaint regarding the theft of antiquities from the Israel Museum,” Ivtzan wrote. “To the best of our knowledge, the Israel Museum is known for its excellent security system….”
