An army spokesman flatly denied last night a Syrian allegation that Israel units crossed the Golan Heights demarcation line and planted mines on the main road between Damascus and Jordan which were fatal to nine Syrian soldiers and three civilians. The spokesman said that Israel has in no way violated the separation of forces agreement signed in 1974 and has no intention of violating it or to harm Syrians in any way.

Circles here expressed surprise at the Syrian charges and noted that the Syrian-Israeli disengagement agreement comes up for renewal in two months. In the past, Syria has waited until the deadline to agree to renewal. Some observers suggested that the mines were planted by terrorists who want to create an incident between Israel and Syria.
