Israelis preparing for the Passover holidays could hardly believe their eyes. The prices of many Passover foods are going down, not up as is normally the case at this season. The large supermarket chains announced they would lower prices in order to increase sales and to prevent high mark-ups by smaller merchants. Some commodities were reported in short supply but the Ministry of Commerce and Industry is making efforts to keep the shelves full and prevent profiteering. The prices of wines, sugar and meat are down. But the price of matzoh is up 45 percent over last year.
