Secretary General Kurt Waldheim sent last night a personal cable to Premier Menachem Begin of Israel concerning the situation in south Lebanon, a United Nations spokesman said today. According to the spokesman, Waldheim’s cable was part of the Secretary General’s ongoing meetings and contacts with the parties.
The spokesman added that Waldheim described the situation in south Lebanon as being “extremely serious.” There were clashes between Lebanese government forces, Christian troops and the United Nations peace-keeping forces in south Lebanon in the last few days. The spokesman added, however, that a Security Council meeting on the south Lebanese situation has not been requested by anybody so far.
